Douglas J. Eboch's Diary of doing the festival circuit with his short film The 24 Year-Old Virgin

I've now submitted the film to about eight festivals. I'm avoiding any festival with an application fee over $25 unless it's a very major festival. The application fees really add up. I'm giving priority to major festivals, defined mainly as those that get coverage in the trades; festivals located within driving distance of Los Angeles where cast, crew and industry people can easilly attend; and festivals that give cash prizes. Hopefully, some of the farther festivals will provide transportation and a room so I can attend them. No responses yet.

We're also preparing a Los Angeles "cast and crew" screening which we'll invite some industry people too. It would be nice to have one major festival acceptance to start building buzz around. The short is primarily intended as a demonstration of our (me, actors, crew, etc.) filmmaking abilities because shorts don't generally get paid distribution. But for it to be a demo, we need to get people to see it. I don't expect too many industry people to actually attend a festival screening, but getting some buzz might get them to watch the tape. Festival screenings will serve more as a way to connect with an audience and maybe meet producers and other filmmakers.

Return to Diary.
